Milla Basset (ミラ・バセット Mira Basetto?), also known as Milla the Hound is the tritagonist of the Freedom Planet series.
She is an orphan hush basset puppy who possesses the power of alchemy, as well as a love for chemistry and companionship.
Before she met Lilac and Carol, Milla lived alone in the woods of the Valley Region, with her parents' whereabouts unknown. To cope with her loneliness, she carves a face into a tree stump and named it "Mr. Stumpy". One day, while playing with Mr. Stumpy near the ancient temple, Milla sees Lilac chasing after a Shang Mu truck, and follows her with the intent of meeting a dragon. Shortly after saving Carol, who was trapped in a cave following their fight with the Mantalith, she befriends her and Lilac, who invites her to live with them in their treehouse. Later that night, Milla overhears Lilac & Carol talking to Torque, offering to help him complete his mission, which was to prevent Lord Brevon from stealing the Kingdom Stone for his galactic conquest. Milla didn't know this at the time, but since she wanted to stay close to her newfound friends, she joins Lilac & Carol, and together, the newly formed Team Lilac set out to save Avalice from the brink of civil war.
Following a 3-year time skip, Milla has grown more independent and lives in her own chemistry lab, where she trains her alchemy powers and makes potions to help her friends on their adventures. Soon, she will use her skills, old and new, in service of the Royal Magister, who has recruited Team Lilac to help defend Shang Tu from the remnants of Brevon's army, as well as discovering the origin of a new threat: Merga.
Later on, it is revealed that Milla is actually from the same planet as Serpentine and Lord Brevon, making her an extra-terrestrial and a war dog meant to be obedient to Brevon himself. It is also implied that Serpentine caused something bad to happen to her parents and was forced to leave her home planet.
Appearance[]
Milla is a young, female hush basset puppy with ivory-white fur, bushy orange hair, bright green eyes and large ears with a set of four bright green discs on them (possibly a genetic trait from her alchemy powers).
In Freedom Planet, Milla wears a sleeveless, beige unitard-like outfit with a bright green tag and shows off a green outfit with white stripes underneath (possibly a swimsuit or a leotard).
In Freedom Planet 2, Milla wears a sleeveless, black romper with yellow straps on the leggings, a yellow crop top vest over the romper and black sweatbands under the bracelets on her wrist and ankles.
For both outfits, Milla wears orange and bright green bracelets on her wrists and ankles, matching her hair, eyes and the discs on her ears. In both games she is barefoot, unlike her friends. The orange bracelets are worn on her left wrist and right ankle, while the bright green discs are worn on her right wrist and left ankle.
Personality[]
Milla has a playful imagination, being friends with a tree stump (Mr. Stumpy) while living alone in the woods of the valley region. She is somewhat shy when socializing with new people, but when she does make a new friend, she immediately makes a special bond with them and will always think of ways to help them out. Milla is of a kind-hearted nature, as she always tries to be nice and cheerful. However, whenever she hasn't seen someone she knows for a really long time (her parents, for example), she begins to feel stressed and will do whatever it takes to see them again, no matter what. Being a peacemaker, Milla hates violence and anger, especially among friends, as shown when she started crying while watching Lilac & Carol argue with each other at Jade Creek, and again when she stopped Carol & Spade from continuing their fight at the Red Scarves Hideout.
In the 3 years after the first game, Milla has grown more independent with herself and has developed a strong interest in chemistry, as she now lives in her own chemistry lab. But her chemistry work has made her more cautious, to the point that if an experiment might go wrong, she makes sure no one is around to get hurt. It is also likely that Milla is more confident in her abilities old and new, due to the training she and her friends received during the 3-year time skip.
Relationships[]
Sash Lilac[]
Milla first saw Lilac chasing a Shang Mu truck, and follows her with the intention of meeting a dragon.[1] Upon meeting her, Milla asked if she could touch her pigtails.[2] Lilac was a bit taken aback by her request, but she quickly accepted the young hound as a friend, and eventually becomes a big sister figure to her. After surviving her mutation at the hands of Brevon, Milla apologized to Lilac, who immediately tried to comfort her when she started crying.[3]
Carol Tea[]
Milla saved Carol's life after she was trapped in a collapsing cave.[4] Afterwards, the wildcat pounced at Milla when she was hiding behind a bush, following her and Lilac, but quickly apologized to her when she realized she was the one who saved her. Carol was grossed out when Lilac let Milla touch her pigtails, and also seemed uncomfortable when Lilac invited Milla to stay with them at their treehouse. The following morning, Milla scared Carol out of bed with a playful puppy bark.[2] Eventually, Carol became more comfortable around Milla, stating she would tell her about her past with the Red Scarves if she was a good dog. Later, Milla apologized to Carol and Lilac for being mutated and attacking them earlier, breaking down in tears.[3]
Neera Li[]
Milla first met Neera when she arrests her and her friends for seemingly trying to deceive the Magister. Later on, she catches the young hound in the sewers after breaking out of jail, but returns her to said jail unharmed, declaring it dishonorable to harm children. Later on, following Brevon's defeat, Neera treats Milla's injuries after was mutated, saving her life. Years later, Milla could tell that Neera felt very angry and hurt over Shang Tu falling and Carol going awol, and manages to calm her down, promising to never hurt her. Even when Serpentine reveals Milla's origins, Neera's opinion of the young hound doesn't change, remembering her passion and kindness, two things that monsters never possess. After Milla defeats Serpentine and saves her friends, the young hound earns Neera's gratitude and respect.
Mr. Stumpy[]
Mr. Stumpy may have been the closest thing Milla had to a best friend before meeting Lilac and Carol. Despite being alone in the woods, Milla always had Mr. Stumpy to play with and to keep her company. She always found it funny when Mr. Stumpy never says anything.[1]
Milla's parents[]
Milla's parents are only mentioned a few times during the events of Freedom Planet, and didn't make a physical appearance. She never knew them and doesn't remember what they look like, due to the fact that she was living alone in the woods for a really long time, and that she was very young (possibly still a baby) when she lost them. Despite this, Milla was determined to find them, as shown when she was making a "SUPER Feather Potion" with Mr. Stumpy.[1] Later on Zao's Airship, Milla saw a shooting star and made a wish to see her parents again. Carol stated it sounded like a good thing to wish for, while Lilac, who overheard the wish, began to show concern, knowing that Milla was missing her parents, and tries to cheer her up later on. Three years later, Milla learns from Serpentine that she is a war dog and an inhabitant from Brevon's planet, where her parents are. Despite the truth, Milla still misses her parents and wishes to see them again.
Aaa[]
Milla first encounters Aaa at the Avian Museum after defeating the Kakugan, describing him as a "cute little vandal". After defeating him and Askal in the Bakunawa's Refinery Room, Milla takes a strong liking to Aaa due to both of them having a love of science. Realizing that his robots are his only friends, Milla happily offers a hand of friendship to the tarsier, and both became "science buddies" from that point on.
Attributes[]
Milla has the personality and instincts of the average canine, shown throughout the game as the following:
- Barking, howling, whimpering and growling.
- Digging holes in the ground and burying objects.
- Wagging her tail whenever she's happy or excited.
- Sitting and running on all fours.
- Having keen senses of hearing and smell.
- Being a loyal companion to anyone she considers a friend.
- Having the instinct to protect people in need.
- Lying on her back in the belly rub position.
- Using the dog paddle technique when she goes swimming.
Milla's weaknesses are her small life meter, slow attacks and difficulty picking up speed. Most of her attacks requires time to charge up, and getting hit during this process can disrupt them, also causing her to drop any object is she might be carrying. She only has 4 Life Petals (as opposed to the 7 that the other playable characters have), making her the most vulnerable to Stunlocking. Milla's overall learning curve is steeper compared to the other playable characters and will require time and patience to master properly.
Some of Milla's abilities and weaknesses have been improved in Freedom Planet 2:
- Her Shield Burst has been improved in the following ways:
- It can now be aimed in 8 directions.
- It is now a rapid attack.
- It can now shoot small, weak lasers.
- She can now jump while using her Barrier Shield.
- She now has new Moves: Crane Combo, Cube Blaster & Vortex.
- She can now have up to 6 Life Petals.
- She can now spawn Phantom Cubes instantly by Guarding.
Powers and Abilities[]
Milla possesses (and was possibly born with) the power of alchemy, the medieval forerunner of chemistry, which serves as the basis of her abilities. Despite being young, Milla is able to pilot certain vehicles, such as a Shang Mu tank in the Schmup Stage, and can even take control of Sparky, an inactive Mutant Iris in Battle Glacier. Following the events of Freedom Planet, Milla began training to improve her alchemy while also learning martial arts, so she could fight hand-to-hand. She has also developed a strong interest in chemistry, in which she uses to make potions for her friends to use during their adventures.

Trivia[]
- Milla is named after the word "Mill", but her name is also a variant of the name "Camilla", or of the Russian name "Lyudmila".
- Milla is a hush basset, a mixed breed of a basset hound and a cocker spaniel. This may confirm that one of her parents was a basset hound, and the other a cocker spaniel.
- Her Phantom Cube ability and means of attack is similar to "Gimmick!" by Sunsoft for the Famicom. Here, the title character uses stars that take a while to charge, can be thrown at enemies to defeat them or used as platforms, and are canceled by taking damage like her.
- Milla's Puppy Float ability is similar to Yoshi's Flutter Jump from the Super Mario Series. The difference is that her Puppy Float covers more vertical distance.
- Additionally, her ability to aim her shield is shared by Bass & Axl's gameplay styles in the Mega Man series. The only difference is that she can aim at 6 directions (8 in Freedom Planet 2) as opposed to 7 directions. While in the air Axl can fire in 8 directions.
- Unlike the other characters, Milla's energy meter in Freedom Planet 2 is used to measure amount of stamina she has left for her Puppy Float ability, and is completely refilled the second she touches the ground or a Jump Spring.
